His work rate was fabulous, but that didn't stop his superiors from criticising his every move at the factory. Before the end of his third shift the garden was a mess. At eleven o'clock the next day, Kenneth was reluctant to even put on the necessary protective apparatus and climb aboard his mechanical charge. Increasing levels of furious anger were evident in Geoff. In spite (perhaps because) of the cramped conditions, Kenneth would tune the radio through many different stations, feverishly twiddling the tuning dial hoping for some musical respite, some escape into the blissful temporality of rhythmic modulations. Ever since this character-forging episode, in a haphazard manner, with little attention to detail, the four of them would charge around the supermarket, upsetting all the shoppers. It had been different yesterday, when there was only three of them. It had been calmer, more independently oriented and much less of the painful ordeal this whole series of events had turned out to be. Kenneth frequently longed for the days of playing his favourite games, quietly in the comfort of his bedroom. Games like Pushover, Syndicate and Beneath a Steel Sky.
