Twelve Chapter
The well-trained features scarcely creased under the impact of the Autarch of Lingane, pondered the matter of thought.
He said, "Twenty-four hours and you waited to tell me".
"Boldly," said Rizzett. "No reason to tell you earlier. There was all matters, a burden to you. If we bombarded you with life it is queer, and in our position we can afford nothing of it. We tell you now because we still make queer."
"Let me hear this business again. Repeat it."
Upon the flaring window sill The Autarch threw a leg and thoughtfully looked outward. The greatest single oddity of the window itself represented Linganian architecture perhaps. In size it was moderate at the end of a five-foot recess that, narrowed, set gently towards it. Precisely clear, it was immensely curved and thick extremely. As a lens, funnelling the light inward from all directions, one eyed a window. Not so much a miniature panorama, looking outward.
In the Autarch's manor a sweep of vision embracing half the horizon from zentith to nadir could be seen from any window. There was increasing minuteness and distortion at the edges that lent a certain flavour itself to but what one saw. The city of the tiny flattened motions, the crescent-shaped orbits of the curved stratospherics creeping from the airport climbing. Unhinging the window, one grew so used to it that to allow the reality of flat tameness to enter would seem unnatural. The position of the sun, rendered opaque by a shift in the polarization of impossible heat and light, automatically blanked-out (rather than opened). They were characteristics of the glass.
