On This Day

1994: Police in Austria stumble upon obscene photographs of Police in Spain, leading in many cases to lasting relationships and even marriage.

1987: Janice Retford, of Telford, England, is born in Moseley Hall Hospital, Birmingham, bringing the world population officially over the 5 billion mark.

1985: A record 4 million listeners tune in to hear Lincs FM's David Lincolnshire perform his last ever breakfast show on the day of his transformation into Julia Lincolnshire in what became the first ever on-air breakfast-time sex-change operation.

1977: The Gay New York Times ceases publication after only one issue due to legal threats from another newspaper, with plans to return the following week as the Gay Washington Post.

1962: Stan Lee rejects Housefly-Man, Bluebottle-Man and Brontosaurus-Man during a character development meeting, instead commissioning the artwork for a nerdy male teen who is bitten by a radioactive millipede, thus laying the groundwork for what would become his most famous comic-book creation.

1781: Immanuel Kant erases all the narrative from his Critique of Pure Reason on the advice of his publisher, and cancels a commission for the one hundred and twenty colour plates that would have illustrated it.
