A full evening's entertainment

From ear to ear a smile cracked open her face. It was the first one spotted for one year, two months, eleven days and four hours, give or take a few smirks. Pure vigilance cannot be guaranteed, however, so it is possible that other smiles have been perpetrated, just not observed. It was a memorable distance of time, because it was also (in minutes) the phone number of the local pizza takeaway, where it was always buy-one-get-one-free on any 12" pizza and only one pound delivery. It had been pizza for tea on more than one occasion thanks to tempting offers like that, although some form of amnesia must have prevented anyone from remembering from one order to the next just how disappointing the pizza actually was when it arrived: soggy and sweating in a lukewarm box, stinking of garlic whatever the topping. The empty boxes would be strewn across the room, or discreetly secreted in the well between easy-chairs, from where their oily stench would seep into the air, the carpet and the upholstery, developing into a subtle and long-standing odour suggestive of cheese, dough and other edible substances, but not quite distinguishable from the stink of the man who had eaten two pizzas for the price of one the night before.

She smiles, as is so seldom the case, because something has made her happy and she has not been guarded enough (or pessimistic enough, maybe) to divert her instincts into sarcasm and the flaring of one nostril. Maybe it was the fragrant air that loosened her reserve, maybe her incredible tiredness, maybe the seven bottles of a foul blue alchopop she had consumed in the last few hours. Somehow it didn't matter today, because despite it all; despite work, despite debt, forgetting a complete lack of any discernible future, she had just scored a straight flush. Sadly for her of course, she had something of a tell.
