Disquiet ShapeSeq Interview
I was interviewed for disquiet.com about my iPhone app ShapeSeq. It's a great retrospective and summary of the whole development and aims of the Shape Sequencer. Read the whole interview here.
ShapeSeq for iPhone and iPod Touch
ShapeSeq is a deceptively simple musical instrument built to encourage instant play.
There are four primitive shapes to choose from representing four oscillators. As each shape is moved around the screen, the pitch and volume moves with it.
Every shape has it's own loop, and every movement is recorded on the loop for instant playback. As the loop can be varied by size and number of steps while it is playing, all kinds of new sounds and effects emerge.

Shape Sequencer alternatives
Of course I'm not the only one to think of making a musical instrument/game crossover.
fijuu
fijuu 1 was started around the same time as Shape Sequencer by two much more competent developers, and appeared at various high-profile international digital arts/media festivals. I found out about it about half-way through my first development phase and while finding it beautiful and exciting, hoped to make something a little less stylistically imposing on the player.
ergates
I found out about ergates when it was announced on the pd list last October and still haven't got it to run. I might investigate it again, now that bugfixes have been issued and pd HID support is getting attention from various angles.
More alternatives will be added as I remember/find them.

New! v1.2! In Sheffield! c90! Showroom Cinema!

A sneak preview of the Shape Sequencer v1.2. Quite a momentous feature-addition if you can imagine the implications...
Well, you don't have to! Thanks to the charming people at Digital Space it will be making it's debut at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield, where you will be able to literally hear and see the sick new sounds and styles on the big screen, then get down with Apfrod Crew's favourite Sheffield party commanders c90 on Friday 23 September.
poil will perform with the new Shape Sequencer at 7pm followed by a DJ set from Juliun c90 with visuals from Vienna-based artists Christoph Hoeshele, Georg Novotny and Luc Gross. Entry to this event costs a mere £2.
During and after the gig the Shape Sequencer will be installed for you to play with, and it will remain at the cinema until Friday 7 October, open to the public during normal opening times. The new version will also be released here at apfrod.com. Smashing!
